Perila – P9-5C [CS]

"HTRK’s N&J Blueberries label come with the first entry in what promises to be an occasional mixtape series culled from sets at their Psychic 9-5 club space, here inviting Perila to cast an hour-long spell subliming psychedelic ambience, spiritual jazz, wyrd environmental, industrial dream pop x rhythmic oddities into an eerie polychromatic haze.

As prolific as she’s been this last half decade - with releases for labels including Sferic, Smalltown Supersound, Shelter Press, and our own Documenting Sound, Perila’s roots as a programmer for Berlin Community Radio (RIP) and radio.syg.ma are here reignited with a finely dream-woven session that considers a level of ambience that prods rather than caresses the spirits.

There's shimmering pads and Fourth World atmospheres, sure, but Perila doesn't lock herself into that sound, instead looking to conjure a mood that's in sync with her own hallucinogenic and sometimes spiked productions. She links drenched soundscapes with humid Roach-ian drones and buzzing, insectoid chirps, then juxtaposes concrète new age with quartz-timed percussion and lilting Fender Rhodes, into hollow, inverted drums and strangulated guitars, through cosmic Jazz and elongated Slowcore, all somehow resulting in a mix of reflections and echoes that stretch out in intoxicating slow motion."
