"The first song tells the story of a two-faced man who is clumsy and feels hot; he meets a woman who saves him by cooling him down, and he soars up towards the mountain and the sky. The second song used to be sung before a raid; it tells of a bird who bites the singer, flies off and alights at different places including a decorated man's house. These phenomena had counterparts in the Hellenic world. The prophet in the entourage of the King is a counterpart of Pythia, who uttered oracles at Delphi, and of the sibyls who played similar roles in other city states. The band of prohets, roving and raving with musical accompaniment, who infected Saul resembles an Hellenic band of bacchants. The common source of these psychic phenomena may be central Asia Minor. Here ecstatic congregational 'prophesying' to the accompaniment of music was practiced by devotees of the goddess Cybele, the Montanists and the Mevlevi dervishes, who performed at Konya from the 13th century till A.D. 1935, when they were evicted from Turkey."
